Microsoft Updates Free Software

by Arie Slob

Hello Windows users,

MSN Messenger 6 Microsoft this week updated two popular free software applications. First MSN Messenger 6 was released in its final form, roughly one month after Microsoft offered a public preview of it. The final version of Messenger 6 shows version number 6.0.0602, while the public preview carried version number 6.0.0268.

For more information on system requirements and some screenshots, see the Messenger 6 article on the Windows-Help.NET Web site.

TweakUI 2.10 The second update is to Microsoft's popular PowerToy TweakUI, this time the Windows XP version was updated with quite a number of noticeable improvements. Microsoft also added support for Windows Server 2003, and also released a 64-bit version. Official you'll need Windows XP Service Pack 1 or higher for this TweakUI version. I haven't been able to test if it also works on the "Gold" release of Windows XP (no service pack), since my XP systems are all up-to-date on service packs. You can download the setup file directly from the Microsoft download server. Here's a link to the 32-bit version [147 KB], and here's the location of the 64-bit [224 KB] version.

  • TweakUI will only work with US-English regional settings
  • TweakUI is not supported by Microsoft

For an overview of some of the new functionality, see this article on the Windows-Help.NET Web site, where I also mention an error Microsoft made where it reversed some settings.

It is expected that more Windows XP PowerToys will be updated to include Windows Server 2003 support in the near future.
