01. New Name, Same Quality

OK, maybe you noticed: instead of the "Windows-Help.NET" Newsletter this is now the "HelpWithWindows" Newsletter. After 6 years with the Windows-Help.NET domain I decided to change it. A .com domain is better recognizable, and when I managed to get the name HelpWithWindows.com I didn't have to think long about it.

I also re-designed the site; it still has the same content, but in a (if I may say so) much better layout. You will notice that there are no longer "printer friendly" versions of the pages offered, but don't worry, they print better then ever before, because of some clever formatting & use of Cascading Style Sheets (CSS).

In the coming weeks I will also take a closer look at this newsletter, and make some more changes besides the name & header graphic.

02. Windows XP Updates

Update for Windows XP Service Pack 2 (KB887742)

This update addresses an issue in Windows XP Service Pack 2 that could cause the system to stop responding if certain TDI filter drivers, such as anti-virus software, are installed. Update for Internet Explorer 6 for XP Service Pack 2 (KB888240)

When you open the Manage Add-ons dialog box on the Tools menu in Microsoft Internet Explorer, some installed add-ons may not be listed. Therefore, for example, you may not be able to select an add-on that you want to disable.

This issue occurs because, during the installation of certain add-ons, a flag is set in the registry that prevents the add-on from being managed through the Manage Add-ons dialog box. For more information about this update, read Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 888240.

05. Windows 2000 Update

Microsoft this week released an update for Windows 2000, which addresses an issue when you use a USB CD-ROM device to install Windows 2000. When the BIOS is not enabled for IDE CD-ROM devices, the computer may not start after you install the operating system and you may receive an error message.

07. Windows XP How-To: Clean up your Hard Drive

Over time, your Hard Disk fills up with all kinds of stuff, and before you know it, that drive you bought just a year or so ago, and whose capacity looked great back then, is already alarmingly full. You need a certain amount of "headroom" or empty space on your harddrive for Windows to function properly. Things like the Windows swap file require empty space on the harddrive for standby utilization and your system can slow down enormously if it's not available.
