01. Microsoft Announces Internet Explorer 7

Hello Windows users,

Despite having previously announced that no new version of Internet Explorer would be released prior to the release of Microsoft's next Windows Operating System (Longhorn), Microsoft chairman and chief software architect Bill Gates announced this week that Microsoft will release a new version of Internet Explorer before Longhorn.

In his Keynote speech at the RSA Conference in San Francisco, Bill Gates said: "Internet Explorer 7.0 will add new levels of security to Windows XP SP2 while maintaining the level of extensibility and compatibility that customers have come to expect. Internet Explorer 7.0 will also provide even stronger defenses against phishing, malicious software and spyware."

According to Gates we will see a beta release of Internet Explorer 7 this summer.

No release date have been made public, nor have much asked for features such as tabbed-browsing been announced (although tabbed-browsing is widely expected to be included). It is also unclear if Internet Explorer 7 will be made available for Windows 2000.

02. Windows AntiSpyware to Remain Free

When Microsoft launched the first Beta last month of Windows AntiSpyware, one question that remained unanswered was if Microsoft would ask users to buy Microsoft AntiSpyware, or if it would remain a free product.

This week, in his Keynote speech at the RSA Conference in San Francisco, Microsoft chairman and chief software architect Bill Gates answered that question, announcing that the final Windows AntiSpyware software would be available at no additional charge to licensed Windows customers. For business customers, with more complex infrastructure support, management and deployment needs, Microsoft plans a managed anti-spyware solution that will be available as part of a paid solution.

"Customers are concerned about the risk malware poses to their personal information, and frustrated by its impact on the reliability and performance of their computers," Gates said. "We are responding by making security easier and more cost-effective for Windows customers, helping to protect millions of people who are vulnerable today."

Microsoft also announced that users have downloaded more than 6 million copies of Windows AntiSpyware since it became available January 6, 2005.
